Historians of psychobiography trace its origins to early biographies, such as Plutarch’s (roughly 50–120 AD) study of Greek and Roman statespersons and Vasari’s (1511–1574) profiles of great artists of the Renaissance period. Another foundation for psychobiography is the study of saints and religious leaders, known as hagiography.
Some hagiographies are chiefly idolizing profiles of saints with the goal of edification of the religiously faithful. On the other hand, “critical hagiography” focuses on more rigorous historiographic research methods to accurately profile the lives of saints and religious leaders (Ponterotto 2015).
