    Djindjic was said to be planning a crackdown on organised crime

    Two senior Serbian politicians knew of a plot to kill reformist Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic, a former gang member has told a court in Belgrade.

    Dejan Milenkovic said that Nebojsa Covic, Djindjic's deputy at the time, and ultra-nationalist leader Vojislav Seselj were aware of the plan.

    Mr Covic and Mr Seselj's Radical Party denied the claims.

    Thirteen men - including Mr Milenkovic - have been charged with taking part in the assassination of Djindjic in 2003.

    Dejan "Bugsy" Milenkovic was testifying as a witness for the prosecution after striking an unspecified deal at a trial arising from the murder. He has pleaded guilty to the charges.

    Mr Milenkovic said the decision to kill Djindjic was made by former elite police unit commander Milorad "Legija" Ulemek and the alleged head of the so-called Zemun crime gang, Dusan Spasojevic.

    "Ulemek said that Covic supported him in the plan to murder the pr
